Iowa is known as the Hawkeye State as is known famous individuals such as Herbert Hoover, John Wayne, Glenn Miller and Grant Wood, to name a few. It was part of the Lewis and Clark expedition and many other historic events.
Iowa is bordered by two great American rivers (the Mississippi and the Missouri) on its east and west sides. It has a rich agricultural tradition and ranks first in the nation with corn and soybean production as well as in hog production from its 93,000 farms. Iowa's capital city, Des Moines, home to 191,000 people, is known for Living History Farms and the legendary Iowa State Fair. Des Moines is filled with family-centered activities.
The beautifully landscaped zoological park, Blank Park Zoo, the Iowa Historical Building and the Science Center of Iowa are all ideal for family activities. The impressive collection at the Des Moines Art Center is particularly worth a visit. Cedar Rapids, the second largest city in Iowa, is a city of rich history and diverse culture.
